Our Philosophy

With its nature and normalcy at the center, women have instinctual knowledge about how to give birth. Their bodies know when their baby should come and they know where and how they want to give birth. In doing midwifery, we strive to provide women and their families with the opportunity to experience their pregnancy and birth in its natural form.

We consider pregnancy and childbirth to be normal and natural events that are inherent in human lives. Pregnancy is not a disease or a condition that needs to be treated and birth is not a medical event or emergency that needs to be managed. Pregnancy and birth are natural events that are best left untouched and given room to unfold in their own unique ways. We believe that most healthy women have the ability to birth naturally and safely without the use of medical intervention as the overuse of this may interfere with the process of birth and the ability to achieve a healthy outcome for both mother and baby.

We believe that by giving information and choice regarding the aspects of their care, women and families become active participants in their pregnancy and birth experience. Birth can be an empowering event, however it is important to understand that midwives do not empower you, but rather midwives help you to empower yourself. You are in control of your own pregnancy and birth.

We carefully monitor mom and baby’s wellbeing during the prenatal period, the birth, and postpartum and are skilled in recognizing when it is appropriate to transfer care. Except during a true emergency, in most cases a decision to transfer care will be decided together with the mother, her family, and the midwives in the event that complications arise during the prenatal, birth or postpartum period. In this way, midwives and women and their families become partners in the experience.

Every birth experience is unique and each family has the right to a birth that is individually satisfying to their needs. We believe that with the proper education, information, support, and observation the best possible birth experience can be obtained. This is the fundamental basis in practicing The Midwifery Model of Care.
